The Role of Drawing and Painting in the Development of Aircraft Design Throughout History

Aviation has fascinated humanity since ancient times. Early attempts to achieve flight began with observing birds and studying their movement, eventually leading to one of the most advanced technological fields today. Drawing and painting played a fundamental role in this development, as the sketches and conceptual drawings produced by Renaissance artists and pioneers, such as Leonardo da Vinci and George Cayley, provided visual inspiration that contributed to the evolution of aircraft design . (Zöllner ،2019 ).
The research problem is formulated in the following question: What design approaches and expressive methods appeared in artistic and scientific drawings and sketches and contributed to the development of aircraft design? The study aims to identify these approaches and methods, including their sources of inspiration, concepts, and artistic and design perspectives, and to highlight the role of drawing and painting in the development of aircraft design.
The significance of the study lies in emphasizing the relationship between visual arts and aircraft design while enriching interdisciplinary research that integrates art and aviation. It also encourages researchers and students to draw inspiration from historical artistic practices to advance contemporary design thinking.
The researcher adopted a descriptive approach in analyzing the study sample, which consisted of historical drawings and manuscripts that contributed to the development of aircraft design. The analysis focused on identifying their artistic and design characteristics and examining their role in the historical development of aircraft design.
The study recommends encouraging artists to produce aviation-related artworks, organizing workshops that integrate visual arts with aviation sciences, and supporting interdisciplinary research initiatives that strengthen the connection between art and industrial design, thereby fostering creativity and innovation in aircraft design
